Screenwriter Q&A Follows The Live Script Read

Consent
Feature Screenplay | 100 pages
Screenwriter, Frank J. Avella
Garfield, NJ, United States

Synopsis Consent is the story of a queer 17-year-old trying to get along in today’s America—an increasingly divided America where the fates of kids who are ‘different’ seem to be at the mercy of geography. At the heart of the piece is an unapologetic gay teen love story.

Inspiration I initially wrote the play version of “Consent” after Rutgers student Tyler Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge. The fact that gay teens and teens struggling with their sexuality feel they have no alternative but suicide because the people around them see them as abnormal is insane, and yet epidemic. Still. That’s why I adapted my play for the screen. I felt the story was meant for the visual medium and I always had the first scenes in my head. And, if anything (sadly) the story has become even more applicable to our times.

As I spoke with teens, I found that, often, there are more subtle types of bullying that go on and attempt to undermine who the teen is or is on the road to becoming. In addition, I found that most of the adults in the bullied queer teens lives, behave in ways that are not role model-like. Quite the contrary.

My final bit of inspiration was the lack of HONEST gay teen love stories that weren’t afraid of portraying two boys discovering who they are as sexual beings with one another.
