Mon-Gaia

Gaia (15:25 min, Australia)
dir. Erin Fowler & Nick Graalman

Synopsis: Gaia (Mother Earth) is struggling for survival in an increasingly degraded and urbanised planet. Nature is so vast that our minds are sometimes overwhelmed by our role and responsibility in the delicate web of life. Our urban landscape continues to dominate the globe with little thought for the consequences and the resources it requires. Gaia uses the evocative blend of movement, music and film to highlight this reality and remind us of our kinship with planet earth. Through the language of dance, Gaia tells a universal story that is relevant across the globe.

Thurs-Newport

‘The Newport Effect’ (94:25 min, USA),
dir. Beverly Penniger,  dir. Alyson Young

Synopsis: The Newport Effect covers the history of the legendary Newport Folk Festival and its profound impact on the world of folk music and social activism. Infamous as the place where Bob Dylan ‘went electric’ in 1965, the reach of the festival goes far beyond that iconic moment. The festival brought its audiences roots music from around the world, resurrected the dying art of Cajun Music and introduced the world – on its New Folks stage – to newcomers like James Taylor, Arlo Guthrie and Joni Mitchell. Narrated by Joan Armatrading and featuring segment narrations by Rosanne Cash, Michael Doucet, Steve Earle, Angelique Kidjo, Pokey LaFarge, Tom Morello, Mavis Staples and Lucinda Willimas, all artists who have played the Newport Folk Festival.

  1. Newport was the site for a number of major Jazz performances as well. The iconic Duke Ellington (anyone else recall him?) played there in 1956 and rejuvenated both the popularity of Jazz and his own career. Ellington has been called the greatest writer of original musical compositions ever produced in America.
