It was a quick way to get cash in hand, but, at the same time be extremely underpaid, just like our Mexican immigrants who also work the farms. Avocados, milk, lettuce, radishes, onions. Just about everything you purchase in Canada comes from California farms in the off season. When I was a small kid, I picked strawberries on my knees in the boiling sun and walked horses before school. Just to make a little extra money and have something I could call my own.
