Why We Are Unhappy In Cities (我们在城市不快乐原因分析)
Thesis Film | Duration: 00:26:46
Dir. Zhao Gang, China
Language: Chinese with English Subtitles

*Nominated For Best Dance Film, Best Short Film

Synopsis: A film that explores the relationship between modern people and objects. When people create objects (commodities), they also become slaves of the objects, and even alienate themselves into the objects themselves-the plot where the heroine plays the model in the window accurately interprets this idea. And the actor finally disappeared in the chase of the items … So this movie is also a parable about the city.

Birds
Dance Film | Duration: 00:08:34
Dir. John Degois, France
Language: MOS

*Nominated For Best Dance Film

Synopsis: With this piece the director tries to transpose live performance into film. He thus chooses to make a sequence shot in order to keep the notion of “live”, slow motion to allow the spectator to have time to watch where he wants. He also breaks the perspective by not necessarily centering the main action in the middle of the image. Against a background of melancholy, Birds evokes a time when the question of freedom did not arise.

Pandemia
Dance Film, Experimental Film, Music Video | Duration: 00:03:48
Dir. Katerina Giannakopoulou, Germany
Language: Portuguese

*Nominated For Best Dance Film, Best Art Film

Synopsis: Pandemia An experimental movie such as an art music video which shows the relationship between human kind and nature and how it has evolved through the artistic perspective of dance. The viral pandemic is the theme. I got my inspiration from the strange rhythm of the music and its sound aesthetic, also choosing dance moves from my own point of view representing aspects of the destruction of nature by humans relating to the pandemic. As the dancer and actor, I represent mother nature illustrated by different facial expressions and gestures, such as, being torn, weakness, the mechanization of natural movement as a form of violation by humans and then in return, nature throwing a virus back to us, for our destruction.

In the dizziness of our thoughts, only our bodies continue to vibrate. This is why we need to go out and dance.

Sunglow Gecko
Dance Film | Duration: 00:13:15
Dir. Kendra Epik, Canada
Language: English

*Nominated For Best Dance Film, Best Short Film

Synopsis: Sunglow Gecko is an exploration of introspection and an attempt to piece together fleeting moments of uncertainty. It is trying to understand what it feels like to learn something new for the first time. To make our own conclusions about objects that have already been claimed. As we search to find a shade of a colour that perfectly fits, what else will we discover? Does a conclusion reveal everything about yourself that you need to know? Maybe we already know what this is supposed to be like, but maybe we can decide for ourselves. Colour, shape, light, and texture tell a story that has been told many times, but it will be new. Nothing is certain, everything is certain. If we start again from the beginning, will everything pan out the same?

Toporzeł
Dance Film | Duration: 00:09:00
Dir. Iwona Pasińska, Poland
In Attendance via Zoom for a Post Premiere Q&A
Language: MOS

*Nominated For Best Dance Film, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography

Synopsis: TOPORZEŁ Beautiful mountain landscapes, from which the figures of dancers grow, rocks, bushes, the severity of nature and its strength, everything intertwines with each other, thus emphasizing the strong bonds between nature and man. This was the set of the latest film project of the Polish Dance Theatre entitled Toporzeł. The project was inspired by sculptures by Stanisław Szukalski. In the works of this artist, who causes strong emotions, the motif of the human body appears; one can see muscle tension, movement, gesture and expression. The sculpture is made of earth, of nature, of which man is a part – this was the interpretive code of the project. The Toporzeł project could not have been created anywhere else than in the Izerskie Mountains in the “Stanisław” quartz mine in Szklarska Poręba. The Karkonosze and Izerskie Mountains hide secrets, they are a place where magic mixes with reality, where the history of the legendary Mountain Spirit is still alive. The film and the accompanying album are further elements building the story of the Polish Dance Theatre.
